Nestled in the vibrant heart of Tokyo, Koenji is not your typical destination. It’s oozing with cool, but the kind that’s more subtly confident than ostentatious.

We firmly believe it’s also home to the best Tempura and Tendon in Tokyo.

With a rich history and culture that’s as diverse as its vintage shops, Koenji is a pocket of eclecticism and individualism that’ll attract and endear you, whether you’re into art, culture or offbeat nightlife.

Here’s our short guide to the mini cool capital of Tokyo —

Edokko Character: Koenji’s roots run deep, back to the Edo period. Originally a post station along the Koshu Kaido highway, it’s come a long way from its horse-and-cart days. But, it hasn’t forgotten its past, and you can feel it in the narrow streets and traditional architecture.

A True Arts District: Koenji’s blocks display stunning street art and proudly host galleries that showcase both local and international talent. Popping in and out of gallery openings is a wonderful way to immerse oneself. BLANK (pictured above) consistently has a full slate of shows to check out.

Vintage Diving: If rummaging through vintage stores to find that one-of-a-kind treasure sounds like your idea of a good time, Koenji’s got you covered. Vintage clothing shops are scattered all over, each with its own distinct personality. Whether you’re into ’80s glam or ’60s boho, there’s a rack of treasures waiting for you.

Unique Nightlife Options: Koenji’s nightlife is as diverse as its daytime activities. Live music venues are the soul of the night here, serving up everything from punk to jazz. This is the place where you might find your next favorite local band or DJ.

Festivals and More: Don’t forget to check the calendar when you visit. The Koenji Awa Odori Festival is electric and sublime and there are plenty of other local events happening at any given time. The Koenji Festival is only a few days away on October 28th.

It’s not a neighborhood that often makes it onto travel itineraries, but if you’re seeking an adventure driven by art, culture and approachable nightlife, Koenji should draw you in.

It’s a district that’s weathered by history, but is forever young at heart, wonderfully preserving its character through each passing decade.
